About This Location
In the year 1853, a town plot was laid out where the two branches of the Maitland River met. John Coryn, one of the earliest settlers built a hotel in the area in 1861. In 1862 a post office was included and the tiny settlement named Wingham. The community thrived as a supply and distribution centre for the surrounding area and with the completion of the railway, Winghams future looked very bright.
Today the town of Wingham has been amalgamated into The Township of North Huron, which offers a multitude of activities for both summer and winter recreation. Be sure to visit the Township of North Huron Museum which celebrates the history of the area from the Paleolithic era to the modern day.
Wingham is also home to Alice Munro, a famous Canadian short story writer who was born in Wingham. Many of her stories are set in Huron County. A literary garden has been established in the town to pay homage to this renowned Canadian. The Wingham area also offers excellent fishing, golfing, hiking, cross-country and snowmobile trails.
CKNX Radio is located in Wingham. This heritage broadcasting company has been on the air as CKNX-AM since 1935. It has grown to now include sister stations 101.7 The ONE and 94.5 The BULL.
